What Are the Signs of a Cavity or Tooth Decay, and How Is It Treated?

Tooth decay, commonly known as a cavity, is one of the most frequent dental issues. Cavities form when plaque (a sticky film of bacteria) breaks down the tooth enamel over time, especially due to sugary foods, poor oral hygiene, or acid buildup.

🦷 Common Signs of a Cavity or Tooth Decay

  1. Toothache or sensitivity—especially when eating sweets or drinking hot/cold beverages.

  2. Visible holes or pits in the teeth.

  3. Brown, black, or white staining on the tooth surface.

  4. Pain when biting down or chewing food.

  5. Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

  6. Swelling or pus near a tooth (in advanced stages).

Note: In early stages, cavities may not cause pain—regular dental check-ups are key to catching them early.

🛠️ How Are Cavities Treated?

The treatment depends on how far the decay has progressed:

1. Fluoride Treatments

For early-stage decay (before a cavity fully forms), fluoride varnishes or gels can help remineralize enamel.

2. Dental Fillings

For small to medium cavities, the decayed portion is removed and filled with materials like composite resin, amalgam, or ceramic.

3. Root Canal Treatment

If decay reaches the inner pulp of the tooth, a root canal is needed to remove the infection and save the tooth.

4. Dental Crowns

For large or weakened teeth, a crown (cap) is placed over the tooth after cleaning and shaping.

🛡️ Preventing Tooth Decay

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss daily

  • Limit sugary and acidic foods

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Visit the dentist every 6 months for check-ups and cleanings
