What Is the Right Way to Brush and Floss for Healthy Teeth and Gums?

Maintaining a healthy smile starts at home—with proper brushing and flossing techniques. Done correctly, these habits help remove plaque, prevent cavities, and protect your gums from disease.

How to Brush Correctly

  1. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

  2. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.

  3. Brush gently in small circular motions, not back and forth.

  4. Clean all surfaces:

    • Outer (cheek side)

    • Inner (tongue side)

    • Chewing surfaces

  5. Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath.

  6. Brush for 2 full minutes, twice a day—morning and before bed.

  7. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if bristles are frayed.

How to Floss Properly

  1. Take about 18 inches of dental floss.

  2. Wrap it around your fingers, leaving a few inches to work with.

  3. Gently slide the floss between teeth—never snap it.

  4. Curve it into a “C” shape around each tooth and slide it under the gumline.

  5. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.

  6. Floss once daily, ideally before brushing at night.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Brushing too hard (can wear down enamel and hurt your gums)

  • Skipping floss or only flossing when something is stuck

  • Not brushing along the gumline

  • Using hard-bristle brushes or old toothbrushes

Expert Tip from Smile Care Dental

Using an electric toothbrush or water flosser can improve cleaning effectiveness, especially for people with braces, implants, or limited dexterity.
